How to Take Care of Yourself if You’re Struggling with Fatigue

Fatigue is something that most everyone likely experiences through the course of their lifetimes, but some experiences with fatigue can be signs of a greater issue, and may require medical treatment.

If you’re fatigued, you’ll feel exhausted, drained of energy, will have little motivation to do things, and may find it hard to concentrate. Many times fatigue can come from lack of sleep, being overworked, or feeling stressed or bored. If you still feel fatigued despite getting plenty of rest and maintaining a pretty normal schedule, this can be a sign of a more serious condition such as depression or physical illness.

It’s always a good idea to consult with your medical provider first if you’re experiencing constant fatigue. For fatigue that comes and goes, there are ways that you can help care for yourself that will help you feel more rested and replenished.

Exercise

Physical activity is so important for your health, whether that’s helping you to sleep through the night, protecting your heart’s health, or helping clear your mind and provide energy. You don’t necessarily need to head to the gym and break out a sweat if you’re not feeling up for it. You can simply walk around your neighborhood, practice yoga, or dance to some of your favorite songs.

Sleep

Getting 7 or more hours of sleep every night is important for most adults. Sleep helps rejuvenate the body, but if you’re having trouble sleeping, try some of the CDC’s tips, like limiting screens before bedtime or avoiding large meals, caffeine, and alcohol. If you’re still not getting enough sleep, this can be a sign of other conditions. Consult with your doctor to see if you may be experiencing a sleep disorder, or some other ailment.

Eat healthy

A balanced diet provides the body with energy that can sustain you throughout the day. Pick meals rich in vegetables, particularly dark, leafy greens. Whole grains, fruits, seafood, meat, legumes, and nuts are all important elements to include in your diet. Find yourself eating out a lot? Try cooking more at home for healthier meals that are lower in fat, sodium and processed ingredients. Learn more from the CDC.

Set boundaries

Many times, we can feel fatigued and burnt out because we’re overcommitting to tasks, whether that’s in the workplace, amongst our family or friends, or in the community. Setting healthy boundaries that give you free time is important for a healthy mind and body. It’s ok to say no to some responsibilities and communicate what you can and can’t handle in a day. Need help setting those boundaries? Calm provides advice for where to start.

Find time for joy

Joy is so important for our bodies, from helping us fight stress and pain to supporting our longevity. Give yourself time each day to experience things that bring you joy, from playing with your kids to taking a stroll through a local park to creating a delicious meal you and your friends can enjoy together.
