Wear Your Helmet!

A helmet can save your life. And, even if you are in a state where it's not the law, there are many reasons why you should wear one whether you’re on a bike, motorcycle, skateboard or ATV.

A general misconception about helmets is that they only protect from head injuries. But in reality, helmets can also shield riders from neck and facial injuries, which are the most common types of accidents.

Motorcycle Helmet Laws

Motorcycle helmet laws vary state by state. In a majority of states, motorcycle helmet laws require that riders wear a helmet only if they are 17 years old or younger. However, those who do not wear a helmet are more likely to suffer from serious head injury as well as other types of injuries that may cause death.

According to the Washington State Patrol, motorcycle riders and passengers need to wear helmets that meet federal standards and that conform to Washington law RCW 46.37.530.

Bicycle, Scooters and Skateboards

Every state has different rules and regulations when it comes to wearing a helmet for bicycles, scooters and skateboards. Some might require riders of all ages to wear helmets while others only require minors. The best way to avoid getting seriously injured is to wear a helmet. The helmet should cover the head and have straps to use while biking or skating.

ATVs & UTVs

There are laws that apply to ATV riders, but most them apply to riders under 18. No matter what the age, safety is always important. We should always wear a helmet when riding an ATV or UTV. A helmet will reduce your chances of sustaining a traumatic brain injury (TBI) or dying as the result of your injury.

Helmets & Liability

Wearing a helmet is one of the most commonsense pieces of advice to protect yourself. If you survive a crash and aren't wearing a helmet, it may be hard for you to focus on anything but the pain of your injury. A whole different headache my be on the way if you're in a state or city that requires helmets and riding without one might be considered negligence. This means that your insurance company might not pay for medical bills or cover the cost of any damage to your vehicle.

The Right Thing

Wearing a helmet not only protects you from harm, but sets an example in the community. It not only makes you more likely to be saved in an emergency, but it also sets a good example for your loved ones. Always make sure you are wearing the right type of helmet and that it fits properly. It may take some time to get used to, but just because you are wearing a helmet doesn't mean it will sap all the joy out of your riding experience.
