Construction jobs involve a variety of general and specialized skills, usually overseen by the general contractor. Subcontractors hired to perform specialized skills are also known as artisan contractors. These included interior designers, carpenters, plumbers, and electricians, among others. They perform smaller, specific tasks of the overall project. Artisan contractors are also known as casual contractors.
If you are an artisan hired by a general contractor, you may be partially covered by the general contractor's insurance, including workman's comp. But that's not always the case, and it may be in your best interest to carry coverage that protects you from mistakes, injuries, and homeowner claims. This is especially true if you take on personal projects and jobs independent of the general contractor.
If you're an artisan contractor or independent skilled craftsman, you will want to protect yourself with liability insurance. If a general contractor hires you, this will usually be required.
Protect any tools or equipment necessary for your profession with property insurance. A commercial property insurance policy can help replace your tools and prevent your income from being disrupted.
Worker's compensation is usually required of general contractors, but you may need this even as an artisan contractor if you hire employees.
If you or an employee's vehicle is used primarily for work-related activities, you may need a business auto policy. This can provide higher liability limits if you are involved in an auto accident while working or on the way to a worksite.
And if you regularly transport goods or tools to a job site, you may qualify for inland marine insurance. This will protect your property if it's en route to the job site or if it's being stored offsite.
A Business Owner's Policy (BOP) may be able to provide several of these coverages in one policy – possibly saving you money and paperwork.
