Farm owner Fred took in a new horse for boarding. Yeah, his barn is full! The horse’s owners specifically instructed Fred to not turn the mare out with other horses as she would attack the other horses! Fred got busy and forgot to pass this message on to his barn worker who turned the mare out with another gelding. The mare sent that gelding to the Mt Vernon Vet Hospital with multiple injuries.
Fred turned to his Farm Policy for coverage of the vet bills as he was being sued by the horse’s owner. The insurance company denied the claim. Fred’s Farm policy didn’t cover damages for horses not owned by Fred, as Fred declined to add CCC to his farm policy. The carrier found them negligent for protecting the welfare of the horse and the farm was responsible for paying the vet fees.
CCC or Care Custody and Control coverage could have been added to Fred’s Farm Policy and Fred’s claim for the vet bills would have been covered. CCC covers any animal in your care, custody or control, including horses. If an animal is injured or dies due the farm owner’s negligence, you would be covered.
If you are a trainer, boarding stable owner or owner of a breeding farm, you CANNOT AFFORD to be without this protection. Fortunately, there is a method of protecting yourself when you have animals that are in your custody. If you need to add CCC to your Farm policy, give your Account Manager or Producer a call today.
